Katie Equals Record on Debut for City of Manchester in UKWAL

On her debut in the UKWAL (UK Womens Senior league) representing City of Manchester, Katie equalled the divisional record of 4m in winning the competition.

Seven of the UK’s top ten women vaulters took part in a very long competition at Leigh on Saturday 4th June in the opening fixture of the Senior UK Womens’s league. The teams competing were from City of Manchester (the eventual winners of the match), Birchfield, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Trafford, Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow, Enfield and Haringey and Woodford Green Essex Ladies.

Vaulting into a very strong, gusty and unpredictable wind all the vaulters were tested to the full.  All bar one of the vaulters came in at a very low 3m 20, well down on their best heights to ensure points were scored for their respective teams and worked their way through the heights.

Only three vaulters remained clear at 3m 60. Maria Seagar achieved a height of 3m 80 and that left Katie and Sally Peake to jump for maximum points. With Sally Peake clearing 4m on her first attempt, Katie knew a clearance on her first attempt at 4m would mean, due to countback, Sally would have to jump 4m 10 to win -but Sally failed to do so.

At the beginning of the competition, due to the conditions Katie had no expectations of jumping 4m but she was very pleased to do so, once again achieving the European Juniors UK qualification height.
